Moon Rise At The Largest River And Longest Mountain Range
15 July 2017 Entry:
I came across this scene while I was on the way to the bus terminal. There's the moonrise, there's the Sierra Madre (the longest mountain range in the country, and there's the Cagayan river (the largest river in the Philippines... So beautiful.
Anyway, with that, I just concluded my first fieldwork ever. Goodbye Tuguegarao. Thank you for the good food and the good people!

CALLAO CAVE: What’s in it for you? (Feature Cagayan Province)
PEÑABLANCA | In an almost placid state of the Pinacanauan River and the final fiery rays of the sunset ended its grand light show above us, the 8-horsepower engine drove about 10 pax on a 15-foot canoe through the famed canyon. Riveting and enchanting as we sped about the nonchalant state of the river park, seemingly ready to retire after a day of activities whence we docked at the pebbly…

Description
Mt. Pulag National Park lies on the north and south spine of the Grand Cordillera Central that stretches from Pasaleng, Ilocos Norte to the Cordillera Provinces. It falls within the administrative jurisdiction of two (2) Regions: Cordillera Administrative Region (CAR) and Cagayan Valley (R2).
The whole park is located within the Philippine Cordillera Mountain Range and is very rugged, characterized by steep to very steep slopes at the mountainsides and generally rolling areas at the mountain peak. Mt. Pulag National Park is the highest peak in Luzon and is the second highest mountain in the Philippines with an elevation of 2,922 m. above sea level.
The summit of Mt. Pulag is covered with grass and dwarf bamboo plants. At lower elevations, the mountainside has a mossy forest veiled with fog, and full of ferns, lichens and moss. Below this is the pine forest growing on barren, rocky slopes. Falls, rivers and small lakes mark the area.
The Park has a large diversity of flora and fauna, many of which are endemic to the mountain. Its wildlife includes threatened mammals such as the Philippine Brown Deer, Northern Luzon Giant Cloud Rat and the Luzon Pygmy Fruit Bat.  One can also find several orchid species some of which are possibly endemic to Mt. Pulag, and other rare flora such as the pitcher plant.
Mt. Pulag is an important watershed providing the water necessities of many stakeholders for domestic and industrial use, irrigation, hydroelectric power production and aquaculture.

Palermo, Sicily - Part 1
38°07'55" N, 13°20'8" E
“Possibly, Daedelus recognized that he had reached a place in which the most lush magnificence, the most sybaritic pleasures console us for – without ever lying about – the harshness of existence.” - Francine Prose, Sicilian Odyssey
Video first for epic context!
vimeo
Just after sunrise our plane cascaded through the clouds and revealed a landscape that was reminiscent of Santa Barbara, California or Kona, Hawaiʻi: green mountains embraced by turquoise blue water. Conca d'Oro (Golden Basin) is the area where the city of Palermo rests on the Island of Sicily and where 28% of Krystal’s DNA traces its origins. Cagayan de Oro (River of Gold) is where Mary’s family traces their lineage on the Island of Mindanao in the Philippines. This correlation is not wasted on us! We each descend from the golden lands of our ancestors and wow, Palermo, has not disappointed.
Storied as the most conquered city in the world, Palermo immediately meets you with a dizzying confluence of cultures. The food, architecture, people, and spirit of this city is a truly wonderful smash of the surrounding parts of the globe accessible by boat. It is not possible to sum up the experience into words, images, or even video. You’ll have to see, taste, and hear it for yourself. We will do our best to share the pieces that moved us to our core.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The graffiti is stunning - some of the best we have ever seen. The streets are steeped in history and secrets that are reminiscent of no other place and yet seem undeniably familiar. It could also be that almost everyone here looks just like Krystal. We wandered for days with our jaws flapping at the beauty surrounding us. After passing a sign for a community archive that led us on a grand adventure we found Krystal’s 4th great grandfather’s birth certificate in a really old book. We spend most days wandering the cobbled streets, trying to stay warm, and in total awe at just how fast a sunny day can turn into 50mph winds and a downpour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The best place to miss out on possible downpours is always a museum! Krystal recently read “The Map of Salt and Stars” a magical tale that tells of many things (you should absolutely read this book) including geographer Muhammed al-Idrisi and his Tabula Rogeriana created for King Roger II of Sicily in 1154. The Google Translated version of the Palazzo dei Normanni website seemed to indicate that the foyer was home to a replica celestial and terrestrial planisphere by al-Idrisi, so we sort of b-lined it to the palace. No replicas here, to see any of al-Idrisi’s creations you have to go to cities like Paris, or London, or Istanbul even though they were created here in Palermo. BUT the Palazzo totally blew us away! The mosaic work alone could take a lifetime to fully appreciate.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
An entire day was spent soaking on operatic genius at the Teatro Massimo - check the video to indulge in some of that magic. We also spent a whole day locked in a pretty spectacular argument, but taking your life into your own hands every time you walk outside (have we mentioned how people drive in Italy?) leads to thin nerves that can fray if not tended carefully. After a day of serious learning and growing as a couple we continued our regularly scheduled programming and visited the gallery at Villa Zito. The work displayed provided an awesome window into the past, present, and future of Palermo. We really enjoyed the black and white photography by Lia Pasqualino and her images of famed mafia photographer Letizia Battaglia led us to watch “Shooting the Mafia” while hanging around the apartment to meet the plumber. You can see the work at Villa Zito virtually and we caught “Shooting the Mafia” on Kanopy through our Hawaiʻi Public Library account and our trusty VPN (yay for libraries!)
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We are trying to take more pictures of the food before we eat it, but we still have a ways to go. Lessons from Palermo: don’t order sardines in your pasta no matter what anyone says, the nuns make the best cannolis, and Sicilian canned tuna is out of this world good. We are steps from the Ballaro Market and no matter what we do our presence screams American tourists coming and sometimes we pay for it, but not as much as Krystal’s mom is paying for stuff in the middle of Wisconsin! If you are keeping a bucket list add “eating my weight in Sicilian oranges” and drinking  “Amaro di Arancia Rossa” to the lineup. We are off to hunt for more magic, do more epic work, and Mary is going to eat grilled intestines while Krystal watches.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
In family history land, the hunt for jure sanguinis (Italian citizenship through blood relation) is in full swing. A record Krystal thought went to her great grandfather, Theodore Pecoraro, for naturalization in the US didn’t match up and no record for him exists in the state of Wisconsin! This is possibly exciting. Italian handwriting is abysmal, but at least they have pretty good indexes! We were able to find the birth and marriage record for the fellow with the mustache, Antonino Pecoraro and his wife Maria Vitale. A wander into a photo shop in Palermo revealed that the family is “definitely not rich” judging by their shoes. Also stay tuned to see if Maria Gigante, the gal clutching her purse in the photo below and Krystal’s 3x great grandmother, is related to the Gigantes of not so glorious fame in New York and Sicily.

God Goes with You
Quennie Joyce Ibarra (Cagayan, Philippines)
"Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you." - Deuteronomy 31:6 (NRSVUE)
“'Where did all the days go?” I wondered aloud as I stared at my planner. As a soon-to-be mom with only a month left before my expected due date, I was growing more anxious each day. I had so many things I had not yet prepared. Our finances were tight, which made me all the more intimidated about our new responsibilities and our future hospital bill. On top of that, I had never taken care of a baby before. An incredible sense of insecurity and helplessness crept into my heart. I felt overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy.
My husband heard my question and came to me. He embraced me and patted my back to comfort me. He read something from my planner that I had written a few weeks back: “Be strong and bold; have no fear or dread of them, because it is the Lord your God who goes with you; he will not fail you or forsake you.”
I have known this verse for so long that at times I have felt extremely casual toward it. However, in that moment of great fear, it consoled me. It was as if my heavenly Father had come to hold me and remind me in that exact moment: “I go with you.” I no longer needed to live in dread of my insecurities."' He is always, always, always with us. So go without fear into any situation.
TODAY'S PRAYER
"Loving Father, thank you that you will never leave us or forsake us. Help us to live in this truth daily." Amen.
Deuteronomy 31:1-8
"'1 Then Moses said these words to all Israel, 2 telling them: I’m 120 years old today. I can’t move around well anymore. Plus, the LORD told me “You won’t cross the Jordan River.” 3 But the LORD your God, he’s the one who will cross over before you! He’s the one who will destroy these nations before you so you can displace them. Joshua too will cross over before you just like the LORD indicated. 4 The LORD will do to these enemies the same thing he did to the Amorite kings Sihon and Og, and to their land, when he destroyed them. 5 The LORD will lay them out before you, and you will do to them exactly what the command I’ve given you dictates. 6 Be strong! Be fearless! Don’t be afraid and don’t be scared by your enemies, because the LORD your God is the one who marches with you. He won’t let you down, and he won’t abandon you. 7 Then Moses called Joshua and, with all Israel watching, said to him: “Be strong and fearless because you are the one who will lead this people to the land the LORD swore to their ancestors to give to them; you are the one who will divide up the land for them. 8 But the LORD is the one who is marching before you! He is the one who will be with you! He won’t let you down. He won’t abandon you. So don’t be afraid or scared!”' He never leaves you or fails you in any way. He is with you all of the time. Be a blessed people! Joe

Outdoor Mindanao: Exploring the Outdoor Recreational Activities in Mindanao
Tumblr media
Hiking in Mt. Apo
Mount Apo is the tallest mountain and volcano in the Philippines, situated at a height of 2954 m. The first successful climb to Mount Apo was led by Don Joaquin Rajal, a Politico-Military Governor of Davao with Datu Manib of Sibulan as their guide, dating back to year 1880. The last eruption of Apo, however, is not yet known; in the boulders section, there are sulfuric craters that release toxic gases towards the summit.
There are 270 species of birds living in the stratovolcano, 100 of them listed as endangered. It is listed on UNESCO's Tentative World Heritage List, as one of the largest terrestrial biological diversity with regard to flora and fauna per unit area.
Let's Go!
Step #1: Go to Davao!
Davao's very close to the two main international airports of the Philippines, Manila and Cebu. Cebu Pacific Air, the local low-cost carrier with a new and modern fleet, offer cheap daily flights from both Manila and Cebu starting at less than 2000 pesos (one-way).
Step # 2: To The Santa Cruz!
Tumblr media
Get in a taxi to Ecoland Transport Terminal when you arrive at the Davao International Airport and travel for 20 minutes, 150 pesos
At Ecoland Terminal, look for south-bound buses such as yellow bus, weena bus, ACFB or Metro Shuttle and ask the driver or the conductor that you will be dropped off at Santa Cruz Terminal. The travel time is 45 minutes to 1 hour and costs 43 pesos
At Santa Cruz Terminal, take a 5-minute motorcycle or tricycle trip to the municipal hall for 14 pesos
The total travel time for this part of the trip is under 2 hours and costs a little over 200 pesos.
Step # 3: Baruring Here We Go!
You can hire a car for 800 pesos, or drive from Santa Cruz to the trailhead at Baruring. This way, there'd be a lower price but three persons would cost more than 400 pesos and timeframes wouldn't be as certain. While a jeep will take 1-1.5 hours to the trailhead in Baruring, commuting will take at least 2-3 hours depending on availability/departure of share-taxis, motorcycle taxis etc.
Government Requirements
A permit is required for this mountain, and a guide/porter is mandatory. The fees are listed as follows:
500 pesos in registration/trekking fee 500 pesos in exit-fee (only if exit-point differ from entry-point) 500 pesos per day for a guide (mandatory) 300 pesos per day for a porter (mandatory)
For the Food!
Food and other supplies can be bought at the Santa Cruz market. Several variety of fruits, rice, etc. can be found there. Also, bring enough food for yourselves and for the porter/s and guide/s as well. Buy enough food for 1-3 nights of camping depending on your pace.
Camping Supplies
For a total package, you may hire the tent, sleeping bag, mattress and cooking equipment from your Santa Cruz tour guide at 2500 pesos. The temperature will drop to almost freezing (0-5 degrees C) during night-time at the summit, so bring warmers or extra clothing.
To the Top!
Tumblr media
Did you know that Mt. Apo is the highest point in the Philippines, rising to 9,692 feet (2,954 metres)? There are in total seven peaks of Apo, all of them within short and easy reach from the summit camp.
Other Places near the Mt. Apo
If you're looking for more adventure and sightseeing, I have listed down some of the few places where you can enjoy a variety of activities.
Eden Nature Park & Resort
Davao Crocodile Park
People's Park Davao
Philippine Eagle Center
White Water Rafting in CDO

In the Misamis Oriental region of Northern Mindanao in the Philippines, Cagayan de Oro or CDO is considered to be a highly urbanized city. The Cagayan de Oro tour is primarily an adrenaline filled adventure activity, such as whitewater rafting, ziplining and kayaking which makes it a top destination for adventurous travelers.
Best Time To Raft!
For the adrenaline junkies looking to bank on some thrilling activities, Whitewater Rafting in Cagayan River is one way to go. The water is clear in calmer periods, and the nearby flora and fauna thrive on it. During its swollen season in July to December, the river rages on as a challenge for whitewater rafters keen on getting an experience for the books.
Travel Time!
Cagayan de Oro is fairly accessible to all modes of transportation. You can go by air, land, or sea but if you have limited vacation time, going by air is the fastest way.
Traveling around CDO is easy as there are jeepneys, motorelas, motorcycle, taxis, and buses that can take you any place you want.

Food Of Course!
Tumblr media
CDO cuisine offers a choice of sweets and comforts, as well as excitement and adventure. The Binaki or Sweet Tamales, made from the ground native corn, milk, cooked powder, sugar, eggs and salt are one such example of their unique food. It is wrapped with corn husks which are shaped in the shape of a frog. Kagay-anons refer to a frog as “baki,” which is where the food gets its name.
Remember me, which is commonly referred to as soup No. 5 or RM, is an exclusive product of CDO. It is the sort of food that tourists are generally interested in trying because it seems to be an aphrodisiac. The soup contains bovine innards, tendons, and bull’s testicles. In addition to the cuisine, you might want to look out for fresh fruits from CDO Kadayawan festival such as durian and bananas. In some food stores and restaurants, you will also have a chance to get your hands on ostrich or crocodile meat.
While You're At It!
You can try the different outdoor activities within CDO such as:

To be fully immersed with the outdoors, we must be able to experience different outdoor settings such as the forest, sea, etc. This way, we will appreciate nature more and feel the benefits of engaging in an outdoor recreational activity.
Criteria #2: Thrill
The thrill of an activity simply means that we are being challenged while having fun. It teaches an individual to push through the fear and be able to explore more.
Criteria #3: Experience
The activity that we should choose should give us a learning experience, whether it may be good or bad experience.
Criteria #4: Physical and Skill Level
Some activities are physically demanding. When choosing an outdoor recreational activity, we should pick an activity that we can do that also challenges us. It must be also doable and does not have a very steep learning curve.
Criteria #5: Safety
When considering an outdoor recreational activity, safety must be our utmost priority.
Criteria #6: Weather Considerations
Most outdoor recreational activity is weather dependent. We should consider if we can still do a certain activity rain or shine.
Finally, My Top 6 are:
#1: Paragliding in Sarangani
#2: Dahilayan

SM Cares continues to drive active participation in ocean conservation by taking part once again in this year’s International Coastal Cleanup Day last September 16, 2023, Saturday.
SM’s goal was to gather the biggest haul of trash and marine debris. This year’s efforts amounted to 75,033kg collected with the support of SM’s biggest participation since 2015 – 15 SM malls in 12 locations in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. SM spearheads numerous cleanup drives throughout the year in support of the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030). In line with this year’s UN Ocean Decade Challenge, Sustainably Feed the Global Population, SM’s projects on water conservation, including the recycling and treatment of water from handwashing and rainwater harvesting, highlights the importance of community initiative in minimizing pollution, protecting fisheries and helping maintain potable water sources for everyone.
“We all have a responsibility to help protect and safeguard our marine environment, its resources, and the communities it serves,” said SM Supermalls Vice President for Corporate Compliance and SM Cares Program Director for the Environment Engr. Liza B. Silerio. “A cleaner ocean means a better future for generations to come.”
The coastal cleanup drive is one of the many projects mounted by SM Cares and leading real estate developer, SM Prime Holdings Inc., to support the marine environment and ocean conservation efforts of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the United Nations Decade of Ocean Science for Sustainable Development (2021-2030).

USAID Grants Over Php65 Million for Energy Security and Conservation in Cagayan and Isabela
Tumblr media
Manila, June 20, 2023—The United States Agency for International Development (USAID) has awarded more than Php65 million ($1.16 million) in grants to support energy security and conservation in the provinces of Cagayan and Isabela. This significant funding was announced by USAID Assistant Administrator for Asia, Michael Schiffer, during his visit to the Philippines from June 15 to 18.
Boosting Energy Security and Conservation
The grants have been provided to USAID's Filipino partners, Tri-Sky Inc. and the Philippine Disaster Resilience Foundation, as part of the Energy Secure Philippines program, which has a total budget of Php1.6 billion ($34 million). The funds will be used to facilitate local energy planning and the implementation of renewable energy technologies, including solar roofing and nano generators, in the provinces. The aim is to enhance energy access in remote communities, enabling them to better prepare for and recover from natural disasters. Furthermore, the communities surrounding the Enhanced Defense Cooperation Agreement sites in Lal-lo and Santa Ana will also benefit from these grants.
"Energy is the Foundation for Prosperity"
Assistant Administrator Schiffer emphasized the importance of energy in supporting essential services such as banking, telecommunications, digital platforms, health, education, and transportation. "USAID understands that energy is the foundation for various systems," he said. He also expressed enthusiasm for the partnership with the Philippines to expand access to sustainable energy in remote communities, ultimately improving the prosperity of families across the country.
Preserving Forests in Sierra Madre
In addition to the energy grants, Assistant Administrator Schiffer launched the "From Ridge to River" project in collaboration with the Mabuwaya Foundation and the Agta Indigenous Peoples community at Sitio Golden Valley in Barangay San Mariano. This initiative aims to conserve forests in the northern Sierra Madre region. USAID will work closely with local communities, partners, and government officials to safeguard the natural beauty and ecological balance of the area. Assistant Administrator Schiffer applauded the project's launch, emphasizing the importance of preserving the region's biodiversity.
Assistant Administrator Schiffer's Itinerary
During his visit to the Philippines, Assistant Administrator Schiffer also delivered a speech at the Asian Development Bank's annual Asia Clean Energy Forum in Manila. He also took the opportunity to visit a USAID-supported drug rehabilitation program in Mandaluyong City. Additionally, during his visit to Palawan, Assistant Administrator Schiffer had the opportunity to explore the breathtaking Puerto Princesa Subterranean River National Park. He also witnessed the efficient waste collection and sorting practices in place. Furthermore, he engaged in fruitful discussions with civil society organizations concerning the pressing issue of illegal fishing in the Philippines' exclusive economic zone. Lastly, he gained valuable insights into the commendable efforts of the Philippine Coast Guard in safeguarding marine resources in Philippine waters aboard the BRP Teresa Magbanua.   Sources: THX News & US Embassy in the Philippines.
